This Old Bong
by Mike Seely
"Handyman Randy Stratton" has a brilliant little book out, entitled Build This Bong: Instructions and Diagrams for 40 Bongs, Pipes, and Hookahs. The text is exactly what you think it is: detailed instructions for how to build marijuana smoking devices from common household items such as honey bear bottles, cantaloupes, rubber duckies and dryer hoses. In apparent homage to the Star Wars scroll, Stratton writes the following in the book's intro: "Despite the protestations of his body, man has long sought pleasure through the smoking of various plants and herbs. In an effort to increase his pleasure, he has also sought ways to increase the volume of smoke he may consume, while at the same time decreasing, through cooling and filtration, the discomforts associated with smoking. One such means is the use of a dvice commonly referred to as a bong. Bongs have been around for ages, but it wasn't until the late 60's and early 70's that they were introduced to Western culture, by soldiers who had either seen or used similar devices while serving in Vietnam." Hence, the absolute best bong name for one of Stratton's devices is the "Vietnamese Thuoc Lao Pipe," which is constructed from bamboo. Awesome.
